Privacy Policy for Bookshelf

Bookshelf respects your privacy. This policy explains how data is handled in the app and is intended to align with App Store privacy disclosures.
1. Tracking
Bookshelf does not use your data for cross-app or cross-website tracking, and does not use third-party advertising SDKs for personalized ads.
2. Data We Process
Bookshelf may process the following data to provide core functionality:
- User content you create in the app: books, progress, reading sessions, goals, notes, and reviews
- App settings and preferences
- Purchase status for Pro features (processed through Apple StoreKit)
- Optional backup/import/export data files you explicitly choose to create or import
- An anonymized device identifier, reading status of your books, and basic device metadata (region, language, app version, iOS version) sent to our backend server to provide features such as curated book collections and AI-powered recommendations
3. How Data Is Used
Data is used only to:
- Operate app features
- Save and restore your library
- Enable/restore Pro purchases
- Sync across your own Apple devices when iCloud sync is enabled
- Provide optional local notifications if you enable them
- Serve curated book collections and AI-generated recommendations, picks, and yearly reading summaries based on your reading history
- Translate book quotes so you can read them in your preferred language
4. Data Sharing
We do not sell personal data. Data is shared only with:
- Apple services required to operate the app, such as StoreKit and iCloud/CloudKit (if enabled)
- A third-party AI API provider to generate book recommendations, reading picks, yearly wrapped narratives, and translations. Only anonymized reading data (book titles, authors, and reading status) is sent for this purpose. The provider is prohibited from using this data for their own training or purposes.
5. Local Storage and iCloud
- Data is stored on your device.
- If iCloud sync is enabled, data may also be stored in your iCloud account through Apple CloudKit.
- Backup files are stored only where you choose.
- An anonymized subset of your reading data is stored on our backend server to provide core app features. This data is not linked to your identity and cannot be used to identify you personally.
6. Notifications
If you opt in, Bookshelf may schedule notifications on your device. You can disable notifications at any time in iOS Settings and in-app settings.
7. Your Choices
You can:
- Edit or delete content in the app
- Export your data
- Disable iCloud sync (if applicable)
- Remove app data by deleting the app and associated iCloud data from your Apple account settings
8. Children
Bookshelf is not directed to children under 13 (or equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
9. Security
We use reasonable safeguards to protect data. No system is guaranteed to be 100% secure.
10. Policy Updates
This policy may be updated periodically. Changes will be posted on this page with a revised effective date.
